As I was sitting in meditation this morning, the song My Favorite Things, from The Sound of Music, came to mind. I often think about my favorite things. I love lace and I love watching the patterns it creates on the walls and the floors whenever the sun is streaming through it. I love how the sunlight seems to dance through the leaves of trees whenever the wind is blowing them about. I love flowers, too numerous to name. I love to see the interesting shapes of trees after they have shed their leaves for the winter. I love watching clouds. I love newborn kittens and puppies. I love the comforting purr of my cat when I stroke him and the comfort of having him sleeping at the foot of the bed. I love the smell of clouds and grey, overcast days. I love rain. I love the wild, unfathomable power of storms. I love waking up in a warm bed and feeling the cool breeze from the window caressing my face. I love dark chocolate and strong coffee and the cold fizz on my throat with that first swallow of beer. I love receiving letters from friends in my mailbox. I love that in a world of seven billion people, a few have chosen to call me a friend.
There is so much to love in life. It is easy to dwell on what is wrong, to get caught up in a negative stream of thought, allowing emotion to fuel a small flame into a raging fire. Today, though, as I face Life’s endless challenges, I choose to think about my favorite things. I choose to allow joy to erupt in this moment. I choose to fill my soul with love and peace. Each day I go forth, inviting Spirit to use me and I make of myself a vessel through which the Light of Spirit can shine. I know that the darkness is dissolved by the Light.
