Egos are very much like balloons. Over the course of time, they will deflate, or they will “pop” all at once when Life smacks them with the great cosmic 2 X 4. They are, after all, filled with a lot of hot air.
I liken the ego to the devil that a Christian once told me sits upon our left shoulder, as the voice in our head urging us to believe everything she (or he) says. There is another voice in our head, but it speaks much more softly and often it cannot be heard above the din of the ego’s voice.
The ego’s abuse of power is responsible for most of the conflict in or lives. If we are not giving away our power to our own ego, we often give it away to another’s ego. Our little egos may feel powerless in the face of those much larger egos, but ours is detrimental to our state of eudaemonia, all the same.
Our ego, whether large or small, wants to deny us peace. We must learn to turn a deaf ear to the ego’s mutterings and ramblings. We can turn away from it, ignore it, and silence it by looking for the good and the lovely things in this moment. We can seek the sacred silence and tune out the egos babbling, in order to hear the quiet voice of knowing.
There is a deep well of peace at the center of every being. Are you willing to dive deeper into that place where the ego cannot follow?
