We are only beginning to see the disastrous effects of climate change. The melting icecaps touch on only a fraction of the problems that have been created worldwide. Of course, we need to find ways to create more harmonious activities that enhance, rather than degrade current systems. More importantly; however, we need to stop what we are doing that is causing harm.
Human expansion and fragmentation of forests must stop. The use of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides, must stop. All of those things that are contributing to the accumulation of greenhouse gases and to the degradation of natural environmental systems must cease. We cannot simply continue to do the same things in the same way and hope for a better future. We simply must stop what we are doing. Period.
The Amazon rain forests are drying up. Areas that were once lush and home to thousands of species are dying. They are at risk of being completely destroyed by wildfires. As natural areas continue to shrink to make way for human activities, farming, and ranching, we are putting more nails in the coffin of a vital ecosystem. We cannot afford to wait. We must each begin today, to add our voices to those already demanding change. We must do this for our children, our grandchildren, and our great grandchildren. We must do it for the other plants and animals on which human life depends. It is time to put down the ego driven, selfish desires that got us into this mess. Our world is no longer about our tiny, personal lives. It is about all of us together as one people, as one world. We can no longer live in a bubble, believing ourselves to be separate islands of which only a few have access. We must realize our insignificance as individuals so that we can make the world significant for all.
