The recent devastation by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas is only the beginning of the hurricane season. Are the naysayers at last waking up to the reality of climate change? Our biggest threats to life as we know it are global warming and the ever increasing occurrence of mass shootings. Surely, on some level, even those who are oblivious to the world around them, are beginning to sense the urgency of the dilemma our planet is facing.
The younger generations are angry, and rightly so, for the mess that we have made. This is of course, a generalization. Still, we cannot use ignorance as our excuse. We must recognize that these problems exist and make a conscious decision to become part of the solution.
In early 2000, there were people who bought into the myth that Armageddon was upon us. They fled to remote areas, stockpiling food and necessities in a selfish attempt to save themselves. I am certain that by now, those people have admitted to their foolish mistake, since the world clearly has not ended. Will we continue to respond to disasters with that same kind of mindset? When the Titanic was sinking, there were a few who pushed others out of the way, caring only about saving their own life. Have we grown enough in our race consciousness, to know that in saving another, we ultimately save ourselves?
The cancerous growth of our government and the corporations that control it are just like the cancerous growths that are appearing in many individuals. The problems on our planet, too, are a symptom of the selfishness and greed that has run amok in nearly every human civilization. The cancer grows in the darkness, hidden from the light of love. We are all one. We cannot continue to be self-serving in the face of still more impending disasters. We must link our arms together around a world that is in pain.
