New Year’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year. It is quieter than most days and I love quiet. I like to get up early while much of the world is still hung over and asleep. I relish those few hours of nearly no sound, to sit and enjoy simply being.
Eckhart Tolle has become famous for his teaching of living in this moment (the only one that is real). He reveals that the past is already gone and the future does not yet exist. When we begin to understand this simple truth, we can move into expanding our awareness, as I spoke of yesterday. When you sit quietly, taking in your surroundings and using your senses to experience the present moment, thought is suspended temporarily. This is the beginning of creating the spaciousness through which awareness happens.
When you make time and space in your life to increase your awareness, those resolutions that you may be making, will be much easier to achieve. You can resolve to lose weight, to exercise more, to eat better; but if you want to be successful in keeping your resolve, begin in the present moment. Each new moment, each new hour, day, week, and month in the coming year, can only begin in this moment. Happy New Year!
