In 1967 the musical Hair, opened with the hit song, Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In. They sang, “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius”. Many people during that period of time truly believed that we were heading into a new age of peace and love. They were tired of the senseless war in Vietnam and hoped for a better future of non-violence.
Looking back, it seems that we have only travelled further and further away from that ideal. While many astrologers disagree about exactly when the Age of Aquarius is supposed to begin, the consensus is that an age lasts for 2,160 years. Fifty years after Hair, we have made little progress towards world peace. Many hoped that by this time there would be a major paradigm shift in human consciousness, but any shift that has occurred, has been blurred by the advances in technology. Proponents of peace from half a century ago are now looked upon as “old hippies” or utopian in their ideals.
While a tiny percentage of humans are becoming more aware of the serious problems that our planet is now facing, the majority of people remain blinded by corporate propaganda. We are living in a time of terrorism, mass shootings, road rage, drug lords, weapons dealers, government corruption, racism, brutality, pornography, and poaching – to name only a few of the world’s problem. We are causing pain, not only to our own kind, but to nearly every other species on Earth. The air, water, and earth that is so vital to our own life, has been desecrated.
Eckhart Tolle, a well-known spiritual leader, says that our human evolution is not a steady incline. For every step forward we take two steps back. With global warming growing in its threat to life as we know it, it feels like a major change is on the horizon. Will it be a change for the better? Will the shift we need to make in our race consciousness, come in time to save us?
