Colors, and how we perceive them, are a mysterious thing. Their meaning can be interpreted on a personal level, or through the lens of collective agreement. Most of us have a favorite color, and probably one or two that we do not care for. Colors are often reflective of mood and can have a psychological effect on us. Each season has specific colors geared towards the ones most seen in nature, or represented by modern holidays.
Colors are often used to describe emotional feelings. We can be green with jealousy, or we can be imbued with the calmness found in the green of a forest. We can have a sunny (yellow) disposition. Red is a color of passion which can be anything from erotic love to violent anger. Black, which is actually the absence of color, generally implies a sense of mystery, either benevolent, or otherwise. White, the totality of all color, represents purity. When we are sad, or melancholy, we are said to feel blue. The blues are an entire genre of music dedicated to feeling downhearted. On the other hand, when life is good and we are feeling joyful, we are said to be experiencing blue skies. Is blue merely two sides of the same coin?
Colors also impart a spiritual meaning when seen through the body’s chakras, or energy centers. These colors move up the body in the same way that the colors of a rainbow appear. They can even be indicative of poor health. We can see someone as a colorful, or interesting character, or as a shady character. Color is the basis of numerous professional endeavors. Art would be very limited, without the use of color. The younger generations are oblivious to the black and white television that their grandparents or great grandparents watched. As life has evolved, it has become more colorful for human beings. Without color, our primarily indoor centered lives would be quite dreary. In spite of the vast array of colors available to us in those things that make up our modern world, nothing can compare to the beauty found in Nature herself. The many beautiful birds like the bluebird or the indigo bunting, the beautifully colored fish in the ocean, a rainbow, a sunset, are only a few of those things that become a feast for our eyes. Even when captured in a photograph, nothing can compare to the brilliance of Life itself.
