WHAT WE SEE (or DON’T SEE)

I have been watching the Democratic Debates for the 2020 election. There are 20 Democrats vying for the position of our next president. I believe that only 3 of those 20, cited climate change as the first and most important issue to be addressed, should they become president. Climate change should be everyone’s primary concern! If life on this planet becomes uninhabitable, none of the other issues are going to matter much.

I have also been struggling with teaching myself how to set up this blog on my website. One of the tutorials stressed the importance of adding a beautiful photograph at the top of each blog post. It appears that most people no longer live in the real world. Younger generations, especially, spend nearly all of their waking moments in the cyber world. There is so little beauty left in their outer worlds. Much of today’s “scenery” consists of pavement, sidewalks, rocks with weeds that have been sprayed with Roundup®, trees struggling in 4 X 4 foot concrete squares, a handful of flowers and shrubs being choked out by weeds, trash in gutters, plastic grocery bags hanging from tree branches, cigarette butts, automobiles, buildings and homes in disrepair, burnt lawns, weeds growing from the cracks in sidewalks… Most are oblivious to this world that they actually live in.

Are beautiful photos of far off places all that we have remaining of what was once a beautiful planet? We can try to create beauty in our own living spaces, but they are devoid of Nature. Our souls – and our soles – long to connect with the Earth that has given birth to us. A part of us yearns to simply sit and watch the clouds or count the stars in the endless sky, but most keep their heads down and their eyes beamed into their electronic devices. Like a horse that has been fit with blinders, their vision is limited. They pass through Life, but do not stop to experience it. They grow old and say that Life has passed them by, but all the while it was they, who turned away.
